Karen Pettengill, MS, OTR/L, CHT OMA Board of Advisors
Karen has been a practicing hand therapist since 1980. Karen’s accomplishments include a term as president of American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), and authorship of well-respected book chapters and book reviews on a broad range of therapy topics. While at the Philadelphia Hand Center, Karen was afforded the opportunity to move to Italy where she developed the Upper Extremity Rehabilitation service in Modena, Italy. A highly respected educator, Karen is presently the clinical coordinator at NovaCare Hand and Upper Extremity (a subsidiary of Select Medical) in Springfield, MA, where she is active in clinical practice, teaching and writing.
Mark A. Deitch, MD OMA Board of Advisors
Mark A. Deitch, MD is an experienced hand and upper extremity surgeon and award-winning instructor. He is board certified in both Orthopaedic Surgery and Hand Surgery. He currently practices in Baltimore, MD with the OrthoMaryland group and uses his expertise to treat traumatic hand injuries as well as arthritis of the shoulder, elbow and hand. Dr. Deitch is currently completing his MBA in Medical Services Management and has a strong interest in the use of technology in the delivery of healthcare.
Alice A. Shafer MA, OTR. FAOTA OMA Board of Advisors
Alice A. Shafer is an occupational therapist, a former occupational therapy educator and a rehabilitation product developer. She designed and marketed many products that have helped people with functional challenges to find practical solutions. Shafer created a well know line of comfortable hand and thumb orthotics for people with arthritis. She also designed and developed cushions to enhance the posture and mobility of wheelchair users. Shafer now works as fine art photographer and watercolor painter. Her work has been included in many shows in the Boston area and in New York City.
Elliott Diamond - DPM, OMD OMA Board of Advisors
Dr. Elliott Diamond, DPM, OMD is a Podiatric Physician and Acupuncturist. His practice, The Center for Enhanced Podiatric Function, emphasizes non-surgical care of the foot and ankle. Dr. Diamond is the podiatrist for the Pennsylvania Ballet. In addition, his approach to Seniors includes treatment for balance issues and includes fall prevention, and strengthening programs that are particularly valuable to patients with arthritis, diabetes and lower extremity weakness.

Lydia Hohman, OTR, CHT OMA Board of Advisors
A graduate of Eastern Michigan University’s Occupational Therapy program, Lydia earned her Certified Hand Therapist credentials in 1993. Lydia worked at the world famous Philadelphia Hand Center , was co-owner of a successful hand therapy practice in suburban Philadelphia and presently works as a Hand Therapist for ATI Physical Therapy in Maryland. Lydia’s passion for art and her skills as a talented stained glass worker have made her uniquely qualified to help others regain the use of their hands whether affected by injury or arthritis. A skilled author, Lydia has written treatment guidelines, journal articles and most recently a series of blog articles focusing on managing arthritis.
